Introduction
As the energy landscape shifts toward renewables, residential storage systems are becoming a defining feature of the modern electrical grid. Yet solar generation and household demand rarely align. Peak PV generation occurs at midday, while residential energy usage surges in the evening. This imbalance, commonly known as the "Duck Curve", highlights the need for innovative storage solutions that goes beyond traditional batteries.
-
Design and develop an electric-to-thermal energy storage system for a single-family home
-
Capture excess solar electricity during the day and store it as thermal energy in an insulated tank as an alternative to traditional battery methods
-
Discharge the thermal energy at night via an absorption heat pump for space heating and cooling

Goals
-
Design a full-scale system that can provide enough thermal energy to last for 8-10 hours
-
Safely operate within New Jersey residential building codes
-
Be reasonably able to main
-
Create a scaled down prototype for testing and demonstration
